Ned Smith Memorial

In August, the Council will receive a commemorative paving stone in respect of Ned Smith. Edward Benn (Ned) Smith, VC, DCM, was born in Maryport on 10 November 1898 & won the Victoria Cross during the ‘Hundred Days Offensive’ of World War 1.

The Council has arranged for the paving stone to be displayed on a piece of cut sandstone, along with a notice outlining the background to Ned Smith’s achievements, on the south quay of Maryport harbour, looking over to where Ned Smith used to live at North Quay.

An official ceremony will be held commencing at 12pm on Wednesday 22 August, comprising WW1 period poetry, read by representatives from local armed service organisations, background factual information presented by schools’ representatives & some opening words from a member of the church, supported by period music from a local band & church choir.

It is hoped that the stone will be unveiled by a family member of Edward Benn Smith, however, the Council hasn’t been able to locate any to date. Anyone who has any information on this is requested to contact the Council.

Members of the public are very welcome to attend the event.
