Ned Smith Memorial

Later this year, the Council will receive a commemorative stone in respect of Ned Smith. Edward Benn (Ned) Smith, VC, DCM, was born in Maryport on 10 November 1898. Unusually, he won both the Distinguished Service Medal & the Victoria Cross in quick succession, during the ‘Hundred Days Offensive’ of World War 1.

Council Tax

At its meeting in January, the Town Council agreed a precept of £194,000 for 2018/19. The precept forms the majority of funding available to the Council to carry out services in the town & is collected on its behalf by Allerdale Borough Council.

Memorials

The Council has purchased six Silent Soldier figures, which are life size, in support of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal & in recognition of the centenary of the end of World War 1.

Support for Maryport Clubs, Organisations & Events

With cutbacks in government funding for larger councils in the area, many clubs, organisations & events based & operational in Maryport & Flimby would struggle to operate without financial assistance from Maryport Town Council. School pupils on the Schools’ Councillors’ Group organised a ‘Decorate-off’ competition, decorating cakes in the tradition of the Great British Bake-off.
