Shipping Brow Gallery

This is the home of Thomas Henry Ismay, founder of the White Star Line whose grandparents had their shipyard near our gallery.

Shipping Brow takes its name from the hill running from the town to the harbour. Folks would gather here to watch sailing ships being launched in 19th century Maryport. Now we are launching our new endeavor with a unique visitor and community experience in West Cumbria.

Opening hours are Wednesday to Sunday from 11.00am to 4.00pm. Admission is FREE, with donations welcome as the Gallery operates as a small charity.

Run by Brian and Dolly Money, the Gallery was founded to house two important collections of Maryport inspired art & the permanent exhibition has the largest public display of paintings by Percy Kelly and William Mitchell.

As a former Victorian pub, there is no disabled access to first floor, but there is a virtual tour of the permanent exhibition at the front desk. The ground floor holds monthly exhibitions of original Cumbrian paintings & also has a small shop, with paintings, prints, cards & gifts on sale.

There is a studio space for a young Artist in Residence, who lives in the attic and receives a bursary for twelve months to work in the gallery and in the community.
