Welcome everyone to this very special event to commemorate the centenary of the award of the Victoria Cross to Sergeant Edward Benn Smith, better known as Ned Smith.
In August, the Council will receive a commemorative paving stone in respect of Ned Smith. Edward Benn (Ned) Smith, VC, DCM, was born in Maryport on 10 November 1898 & won the Victoria Cross during the ‘Hundred Days Offensive’ of World War 1.
In association with Maryport Joint Schools’ Partnership, the Town Council is providing a Maryport Family Fun Day on Wednesday 1 August. It will take place on the green adjacent to Shiver Me Timbers & will feature entertainment devised by the school children of Maryport who represent their schools on the Joint Schools’ Council. The pupils have decided that they would like the event to include water-based games & so children attending should be prepared to get a little wet if they have a go with those amusements.
Entries are invited from members of the community in the 2018 Best Kept Garden & Container Competition.
Later this year, the Council will receive a commemorative stone in respect of Ned Smith. Edward Benn (Ned) Smith, VC, DCM, was born in Maryport on 10 November 1898. Unusually, he won both the Distinguished Service Medal & the Victoria Cross in quick succession, during the ‘Hundred Days Offensive’ of World War 1.
