At its meeting held on 22 May, the Town Council decided not to elect a Mayor for 2017/18, the first time it has not had a Mayor. However, the Council must by law elect a Chairman, & Councillor Angela Kendall was elected to this position.
The role of the Chairman is to lead the Council & is essentially the same as that of the Mayor. Committee chairmen & deputies have agreed that they will represent the Council at events in the Maryport area, such as schools’ sports days, Trawler Race, Carnivals, etc, so in fact, aside from not being represented at events organised by other mayors in the Allerdale area, there will be little noticeable difference to the public.
